Some news for people who like no news. (Sorry, Modest Mouse).
I have won no awards. (I was shortlisted for an Oy Vey but did not win. Oh, woe.) I have signed no film or video game contracts. Enjoyed no exotic holidays. Have not heard my grandchild say my name.
But I have book news. Our editor has sent notes on the Camp FUNdamnit (meant to type FUNdament but the typo fits. Damn it is not something these good believing campers would ever say.)
I have been calling our editor Earnest Erin. No more. I could call her About Time Erin because it has been more than a while since we sent in our revises. But her comments seem pretty darn useful. From now on she’s On Point Erin.
She notes a few inconsistencies, suggests a way to speed up a draggy middle, and – my favorite – thinks our climax will be better if we LOSE half a chapter.
‘Art is elimination’ says one of my literary heroes. The idea of taking out chunks of material to tell a better story warms my heart. Thank you, O.P.E.
I’ll put my other projects on hold for a bit while I tackle this one, bring it to its knees and walk it home (metaphor stew is good for you).
When I say ‘a bit’ I am speaking in my parent driver voice, the one telling the whiny kid in the back seat that we’ll be there ‘soon.’ A bit might be 3 weeks.
Or 3 months.
Or (back to those good campers) around the time of the rapture.
